The dichotomy of Scripture is uniquely intriguing, yet it has great purpose. Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Mt 4:17); however, Christ also implores us to pray: "Thy kingdom come" (Lk 11:2). It would seem to the casual observer that these two Scriptures are opposing one another – a dichotomy. To a student of the Word, one understands that the "kingdom" is both present and future. Jesus is teaching that the kingdom of heaven is here on earth now, yet it will be a glorious future for those of the kingdom. Simply put: "Your future now.”
The advantage of being a kingdom citizen is Christ's heavenly (invisible) kingdom is made manifest in each citizen in the now. For this reason, our template for prayer should be: "Lord, let your invisible kingdom be revealed in me." The Pharisees who were unable to understand this lofty concept further questioned Jesus. He replied, "The kingdom of God cometh not with observation…for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you" (Lk 17:20–21). Through the power of His Spirit, the increase of His government is within the hearts of men and women.
We all have heard the familiar adage: "You can't have your cake and eat it too." The meaning of this proverb is: "You cannot possess your cake and eat it." Once the cake is eaten, it is gone. Scripture turns this figure of speech upside down. In the context of kingdom living, you can have your cake and eat it too! As Kingdom citizens, we are partakers of the kingdom in the now, and we get heaven too!
